The Sami Language

Their language is divided into 2 areas the Western and Eastern languages and within these two there are numerous subdivisions. Six of the nine living Sami languages currently have standard written forms. Their language was formerly known as Lapp but then that became a derogatory term.
The Sami population are located in many different places therefore their official status as far as language varies from place to place. In Norway their language has official status in Norway and in many municipalities. In Sweden it has been considered a minority language and is used in some instances such as nursing homes or pre-schools. In Finland they have an official status and they can use Sami language for government service purposes. Lastly in Russia they are recognized as indigenous people but they have no official status their as far as language.
