The Sami Population and Geographic Location

While the Sami are located across many different borders, such as Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Russia, they are one of the world's least numerous native people. There are approximately only 70,000 individuals that make up this society. The oldest discoveries that tie the Sami to those areas date back about 10,000 years.
About 20,000 of those individuals live in Sweden and are recognized by the United Nations as an indigenous people. However there is a cultural divide between the Sami population and the Swedish population due to a lack of cultural understanding of one another. The Swedes believe that the majority of the Sami's lifestyle is involved in nomadic reindeer herding, which, while it is a large part, it is not the only thing of importance to the Sami. This conflict was further accentuated when Sweden moved to an industrialized society, but in 1993 the Sami Parliament (Sametinget) was created to help with smooth out affairs at a national level.
