The Sami population of the Kola Peninsula is made up of 17 different groups. Each of these groups formed their own society, and each society has acquired their own territory. However, there is no information about a clan structure that could have been in place among the Sami. In the Seventeenth Century there were records of three groups that lived in the Kola Peninsula that could have led to the division of Sami clans. These groups were the Konchanskaya Lop, the Terskoya Lop, and the Leshoya Lop. These three groups resided in the western, eastern, and northern regions of the Kola Peninsula respectively.
